In response to these concerns, the Army developed the ACFT, which is designed to provide a more holistic and functional measure of fitness. Prior to the ACFT, the Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) was the standard evaluation tool, primarily focusing on push-ups, sit-ups, and a two-mile run. While effective to some extent, the APFT was criticized for its inability to accurately assess a soldier's overall physical readiness for combat.

Additionally, the Army encourages a culture of mentorship, where experienced soldiers can guide their peers in improving their fitness levels and preparing for the test. To mitigate these challenges, the Army has implemented various programs and resources to support soldiers in their physical training. Comprehensive training plans, access to fitness facilities, and guidance from fitness professionals are essential components of helping soldiers prepare for the ACFT.

Additionally, the Army is exploring ways to better support soldiers in their training efforts, including the integration of technology and data analysis to track progress and identify trends. Feedback from soldiers remains a critical component of this process, and the Army is actively seeking input to refine the scoring system and test events. As the ACFT continues to evolve, the Army is committed to ongoing evaluation and adjustment of the test.

Each event is designed to evaluate different aspects of physical fitness, including strength, endurance, agility, and coordination. The APFT was criticized for not accurately reflecting the physical demands of modern warfare. The ACFT was introduced to replace the Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT), which primarily measured aerobic capacity through the two-mile run, along with push-ups and sit-ups. The acft points comprises six events: the deadlift, standing power throw, hand-release push-ups, sprint-drag-carry, leg tuck, and a two-mile run.

Each event in the ACFT is scored based on a soldier's performance. The scoring system is designed to provide a comprehensive assessment of fitness levels across the six events. Each event is scored out of 100 points, with the total possible score being 600 points.

As of 2026, data indicates that the overall performance of soldiers on the ACFT has improved compared to the initial implementation in 2020. This improvement can be attributed to increased training resources, better coaching, and a growing emphasis on physical fitness within the Army culture. However, disparities remain among different demographics, with variations in performance based on age, gender, and military occupational specialties (MOS).

Performance on the ACFT can influence promotion opportunities, assignments, and even retention decisions. Moreover, the ACFT serves as a critical tool for personnel evaluation within the Army. This creates an environment where soldiers are incentivized to prioritize their physical training and overall health, fostering a culture of fitness within the ranks. Soldiers with higher test scores are often viewed as more competitive candidates for advancement, as physical fitness is a key component of leadership and effectiveness in military roles.

The Army has made adjustments to the scoring system to account for these disparities, but concerns remain about the fairness and inclusivity of the test. As the Army continues to refine the ACFT, it must ensure that it remains a valid measure of fitness while also promoting equity among all soldiers. However, the implementation of the ACFT has not been without controversy. Critics argue that the test may disproportionately affect certain demographics, particularly women and older soldiers, who may struggle with specific events.

As society increasingly recognizes the importance of holistic health and wellness, the Army's approach to fitness through the ACFT reflects a commitment to developing well-rounded soldiers. This shift not only enhances military readiness but also promotes lifelong fitness habits that soldiers can carry beyond their service. Furthermore, the ACFT's focus on functional fitness aligns with broader trends in physical training and health.

Some units struggled to adapt to the new requirements, leading to inconsistencies in testing and training regimens. Additionally, the transition period saw various logistical issues, including the need for specialized equipment and facilities to conduct the test.

Ongoing research and data analysis will inform potential adjustments to the scoring system and event standards. Additionally, the Army is exploring ways to integrate technology into training and assessment, such as using wearable devices to monitor performance and provide feedback. Looking ahead, the Army aims to continue refining the ACFT to ensure it remains relevant and effective.
