Tips to staying safe in your garden

Our gardens are more hazardous than we probably realise. In fact, each year tens of thousands of us are injured in our very own backyards.

1.     Working with tools – Wear protective safety equipment – safety goggles, ear muffs and boots – when working with tools.

2.     Garden equipment – Store all garden equipment, especially mowers and weed eaters etc, in a locked garden shed or covered securely with a tarpaulin. Store any petrol or other motor fuel out of reach of children.

3.     Poisons and chemicals – Always keep chemicals locked away and out of reach of children.  Keep chemicals in their original containers and never pour them into old drink containers – they may look tempting to children.

4.     Ladders – Only use a ladder if you feel confident and know how to use it safely. Check it’s in good condition before you climb up and make sure it’s on a firm, stable surface. Don’t over-reach sideways – climb down and move the ladder instead.

5.     Paths and driveways – Keep them in good order.  Remove overhanging branches, fix potholes, cracks, and clean up moss and dead leaves that can become very slippery when wet.
